Nissan R35 GT-R Ownership Costs?

What does it cost to own and run one of the most iconic cars in automotive history?

The Nissan R35 GTR has been in production in the UK since 2008. Affectionately named Godzilla down to it’s ability to destroy all competition on track. The GT-R’s automatic transmission and 4-wheel drive system offers incredibly accessible performance.

The R35, much like its predecessors, has gathered cult status since its release. Offering supercar performance at a fraction of the price.

Nissan GT-R Purchase Price

There are many spec and trim levels for the GT-R with many used examples available to suit many budgets.

Base Price: £83,865 | Nismo: From £177,865 | Used: Mid-Low £30,000 – £45,000 | Used Facelift: £62,000

The current sweet spot appears to lie with early facelift models. At their current value you could own and drive the car for 6 years costing around £17,000 in depreciation.

What about finance?

For many, finance is the only way to get the car of your dreams. Nissan offer finance deals but you’ll often find the best deals from an independent broker who can shop around for the best package to suit you.

One of the great things about the R35 is, after the initial 18-24 month depreciation, value drops much more slowly than other vehicles such as the BMW M4. As a result, monthly payments will tend to be much lower to similarly valued cars.

Taxing the Nissan GT-R

Tax for your Nissan GT-R is one of the more manageable costs. With 12 months tax totaling £580

If you do purchase a vehicle that is less than 4 years old in the UK costing more than £40,000 when new luxury car tax will be imposed for those 4 years.

Nissan GT-R Insurance Costs

Unfortunately, the R35 GT-R sits in band 50 for insurance, the highest possible group. Insurance costs are something very difficult to pin down an exact figure as it is heavily affected by several factors.

A clean license is a great start, as is a high no claims bonus. But ensure you shop around, using high street brands, comparison sites and specialists brokers to help find the best deal for you.

Fitting a tracker or specialist immobiliser system is also a great way to help reduce your insurance premium. As well as providing you with peace of mind and increasing re-sale desirability.

MPG and Fuel Costs

Officially, the Nissan GT-R can achieve upwards of 20MPG combined with sensible driving and motorway miles. Around town this can reduce to just 13MPG.

Be sure to fill up using premium, high octane fuel which is often around 10-20p a litre more expensive than regular fuels.

Service Costs

The model and year will dictate your service schedule. Early models require regular services at 6 months or 5/6,00 intervals, which ever comes sooner. Later models require annual services or every 10/12,000 miles.

Tyres

If your Nissan GT-R is in regular use, tyres could become a determining factor to affordability. You dont want to cheap out on rubber no matter what car you drive.

The GT-R is equipped with 255/40/20 tyres on the front and 285/35/20 at the rear. Owners recommend the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S which would set you back around £900 for a full set.

Discs and Pads

Replacing the discs and pads on the Nissan R35 GT-R will set you back around £800 per corner. Many owners add power, therefore it’s just as important to make sure braking is on par.

Track Wear and Tear

Bear in mind, if you plan on tracking your Nissan GT-R, you will go through consumables such as brakes and tyres much quicker than regular driving.

Warranty

If you purchase your GT-R within 3 years of it being produced, then you will be protected under Nissan’s factory warranty. Buying approved used will also give you 12 months as standard.

Aftermarket warranty varies from provider to provider but you should expect to pay between £250-£300 to cover repairs up to £10,000 and labor costs up to £100 per hour.

Modifications

The majority of Nissan R35 GT-R owners report that it’s actually the cost of modifying rather than ownership costs that tend to be higher than other cars.

Of course, you don’t need to modify your car, but if you do chasing power becomes infectious!
