Nissan R35 GT-R – MVT Intercooler JS024IC, Under the Microscope.

An in depth look at all the data gathered from our Nissan R35 GT-R, Multi Vane Technology Intercooler.

We identified the stock intercooler arrangement as an area with huge potential for improvement. The results from 2 years of testing and development speak for themselves! & remember, all this was achieved on the standard engine map.

All tests where performed in controlled environments allowing us to gather highly accurate data. Air temperature and pressure drop data, test where carried out on a closed circuit and tested back to back in like for like conditions. Power and Torque was measured on the dyno on the same day under identical conditions and ambient air temps.

Power

At no point during the Dyno run did the power curve with the MVT fitted, fall below the stock figure. Peak power for the standard intercooler was 512.4HP. After installing our MVT intercooler Kit, power increased a whopping 30.7HP to provide a reading of 543.1HP. You can also see how the MVT curve only begins to plateau around 6,750rpm, whereas the OEM curve starts to flatten off around 6,250rpm range. An even greater power increase would be available in conjunction with a remap.

Torque

The difference between power and torque is sometimes difficult to explain. We like to say torque is how hard you are pushed back into your seat whereas power determines how long you are pushed back. From just 2,500rpm, nearly 100FtLb more torque is available with MVT fitted! At peak it delivers 495.7FtLb, 13.6 more than standard. The MVT curve is constantly higher and much smoother, with no sudden fluctuations.

Outlet Air Temps

When discussing intercooler performance Outlet Air Temperature is perhaps the most important. This determines if in fact an intercooler is performing well and dictates how much additional power and torque your car may gain. In this case, the lower the temperature, the better. As you can see, over the duration of the test, the MVT Intercooler provided a considerably lower outlet temp when compared to the standard setup. The maximum temp reached with MVT was 34 degrees C. 8 Degrees C lower than stock. As time passes MVT begins to make more of a difference, this is because the intercooler is being asked to work much harder. MVT is more efficient at cooling this air, making it perfect for track or race use.

Pressure Drop

Much like outlet temperature, lower is better for pressure drop data. Simply put, the drop refers to the amount of boost pressure lost as air passes through an intercooler. The lower the drop, the more boost is left over and available to enter the engine, resulting in more power. Although the standard intercooler performs very well in this aspect, we knew we could make it better. Japspeed’s MVT Intercooler offers up to 0.02 BAR less pressure drop (0.29PSI) at peak boost. However, MVT also offers less drop over the full duration of the test.

Temp Difference

This graph shows us exactly how efficient the intercooler is by comparing the difference between the air temperature going in to the intercooler and the air leaving. For example, if air entering the intercooler was 80 degrees C and leaving, it was 40 degrees C, this would be a temperature decrease of 40 degrees – Which is exactly what our MVT kit does. Averaging between a 40-50 degree range with peak temp decreases edging towards a huge 60 degrees C! The standard intercooler in comparison, is stable between a 20 and 30 degree range, occasionally edging towards 35 degrees C drops.
