A professional drift driver from Upminster is aiming for the title when the British Drifting Championship begins next month.

Steve ‘Baggsy’ Biagioni will be running for Team Japspeed with a 2005 Subaru, powered by a new Toyota 1JZ engine with 520bhp – more power than most Ferraris. The 23-year-old, sponsored by Maxxis Tyres, Moster Energy and Evolution Fightwear, took time out last season to test the car so its ready for the first of the six round championship at Donnington Park over the weekend of April 23/24.

Baggsy will be joined by team-mates Paul Smith and Boyzone star Shane Lynch in the team, and hopes to follow on from his 2009 title success.

Drifting is a particular driving technique where a driver intentionally over steers to let the back end slide out while maintaining control and high speeds. Competitors are judged on line, angle, speed and show factor.

He said “For six months, we have worked seven days a week to build the car and a year of testing as everything had to be hand made and cost over £45,000 to date. We have also had to go from Subaru’s four-wheel-drive, down to two wheel rear wheel drive as needed for drifting.
After 2010 getting to grips with the new car, 2011 will be about winning this year and nothing less. We have done so much testing its unreal.”
