It is no secret that the organisers of the Irish Drift Championship go to great lengths each year to raise the stakes with each and every event year on year. So far 2016 is shaping up to be no different as the series headed to mainstay venue the Corrin Events Centre (aka the Concrete Jungle) on 21st-22nd May.
With a tight technical layout bordered by a series of concrete walls the IDC drivers had their work cut out to make it to the top spot. However this year freak storm weather would add another level to this already dangerous and unpredictable layout.
Heading out for pro practice early in the day Japspeed driver Shane ‘Sully’ O’Sullivan soon added a few wall marks to the rear of the RB-powered Japspeed S15 as he tapped walls and found his rhythm…filling the air with Maxxis Tyre smoke all the while!
“If your not rubbing these Fermoy walls than your not trying hard enough”
– Shane ‘Sully’ O’Sullivan
Despite the difficult layout Shane kept his cool and lay down a pair of incredible qualifying runs earning him a score of 93 points for his first run and 3rd place qualifier as the battles began. Having qualified highly Shane was spared from the nerve-shattering sudden death battles the IDC has become known for and headed straight into the top 16.
Shane came face to face with IDC veteran Mike Fitz in the first round of battles. Both drivers headed out onto the Fermoy circuit with everything to play for. Shane lay down some impressive marks on his lead run albeit with Mike stuck to his door. Shane took the advantage and it looked to be a repeat of the last time these two met at Round 1 earlier this year.
However as Mike took the lead Shane was unable to keep the pressure on during his chase run leaving the judges with no choice but to bring a premature end to Shane’s weekend.
All in all a minor setback however Shane remains in a strong position overall sitting joint 2nd alongside 2015 BDC Champion Jack Shanahan. Rest assured he’ll come back harder and stronger for Round 3 in a few weeks’ time.
